Honored Coach of the USSR Tatyana Tarasova responded to the decision of the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach not to hold new elections for the head of the organization in March 2025 “Sports Express”.
“Bach will go and that’s fine. The main thing is that the new IOC president is no worse than the old one, so that when making a decision he thinks about how it will affect the lives of athletes and coaches,” Tarasova said.
Elections for the new IOC president will be held in Greece in March 2025.
Bach has been president of the IOC since autumn 2013. He succeeded Jacques Rogge in the post. He became the first German in history and the first Olympic champion to preside over the IOC. In 1976, Bach won Olympic gold in team foil. Bach also won the world championship in this discipline in 1977.
At the end of February 2022, the IOC issued a call to international sports federations, recommending that Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be allowed to participate in any competitions. The organization decided to accept Russians and Belarusians as neutral athletes at the 2024 Olympic Games at the end of 2023. To participate, they had to meet a number of conditions and qualify. The medals of Russians and Belarusians are not taken into account in the medal standings.
