American athlete Sydney McLaughlin broke a world record by winning the 400-meter hurdles at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
The 25-year-old athlete clocked in at 50.37 seconds. Second place went to her compatriot Anna Cockrell (51.86) and third place went to Dutchwoman Femke Bol (52.15).
This gold medal was McLaughlin’s third at the Olympic Games.
At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a call to international sports federations, recommending that Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be allowed to participate in any competitions. The organization decided to accept Russians and Belarusians as neutral athletes at the 2024 Olympic Games at the end of 2023. To participate, they had to meet a number of conditions and qualify.
American sprinter previously diagnosed with coronavirus was taken away from the stadium in a wheelchair.
