Dutch beach volleyball player Steven van de Velde, who was found guilty of raping a minor and is serving a sentence, was booed by fans ahead of his first match at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. This was reported by DEA News.
On 28 July, paired with Matthew Immers, van de Velde lost the opening match of the group stage of the Olympic tournament 1–2 to Italians Alex Rangeri and Adrian Carambula. The Dutch volleyball player was booed during the pre-match presentation.
It is worth noting that Van de Velde lives separately from other athletes.
Van de Velde was sentenced to four years in prison for having sex with an underage girl. After serving part of his sentence, he was sent back to the Netherlands, where his sentence was commuted in accordance with local law.
