Shoko Miyata, 19, the leader of the Japanese artistic gymnastics team, will not compete at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris due to a rule violation on the national team. This was reported by Kyodo.
In Japan, smoking and drinking alcohol are legal at the age of 20. The Japan Gymnastics Association said in a news conference that Miyata, 19, admitted to drinking once and smoking once since the end of June after returning to Tokyo from the team’s training base in Monaco.
Miyata won the bronze medal on balance beam at the 2022 World Championships.
At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee issued an appeal to international sports federations, recommending that Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be allowed to participate in any competitions. The organization decided to accept Russians and Belarusians as neutral athletes at the 2024 Olympic Games at the end of 2023. To participate, they had to meet a number of conditions and qualify.
