The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has requested the owners of Manchester City to sell some of their shares in Girona so that both clubs can take part in the Champions League next season. This was reported by Times.
City Football Group owns 100 percent of Manchester City and 47 percent of Girona. Both teams have already guaranteed participation in the next Champions League tournament, but the owners must reduce their stake in one of them to below 30%. Accordingly, if this is not done, the Spanish club can play in the Europa League by staying behind one more tournament.
UEFA’s rules on multiple club ownership for next season’s European competitions were sent to clubs this week.
Manchester City lead the English Championship standings with one round remaining. Pep Guardiola’s men, who won the Champions League last year, will not be able to defend their title this season. Girona is in third place in the Spanish championship, where Real Madrid clinched the title ahead of schedule.
