State Duma deputy Biysultan Khamzaev evaluated the activities of the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin and also expressed his opinion on how his successor in this post, Mikhail Degtyarev, should structure the work. In a comment to socialbites.ca, Khamzaev condemned Matytsin for his soft response to sanctions against Russian sports.
“I did not have enough positions. There are concepts of charisma and character. Oleg Matytsin followed a very soft policy during the period when we were “bitten”. Everyone is waiting for someone to make a decision. Now we have approved the minister and he, the Russian society, the details in the actions and work of our athletes, including on the international stage “We are against our athletes participating in international competitions without national symbols – flag, coat of arms, anthem. We believe that the Minister of Sports should be in charge here too,” said Khamzaev.
At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a call to international sports federations and recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions. At the end of 2023, the organization decided to accept Russians and Belarusians as neutral athletes. To participate, they must meet a number of requirements and be qualified.
