Washington Capitals’ Russian forward and captain Alexander Ovechkin closed the gap with Canadian Wayne Gretzky on the list of all-time scorers in the National Hockey League (NHL).

The Canadian hockey player scored 894 goals during his NHL career and tops the list of the best snipers in league history. Ovechkin sits second, 46 goals behind Gretzky; The Russian player currently has 848 goals.

Ovechkin scored his 847th and 848th goals in the NHL regular season match against the Winnipeg Jets on March 24, and the match ended with a score of 3:0. The Russian striker scored in the 44th and 53rd minutes of the match. Ovechkin’s first goal was initially attributed to his teammate, forward Connor McMichael, due to the hockey players shooting the puck at the same time, but was later attributed to the Russian player.

Ovechkin scored 26 goals in 67 regular season games this season. He also made 32 assists.

Washington will play its next NHL regular season game on March 27 against the Detroit Red Wings. The starting siren will sound at 02:00 Moscow time.
