Washington Capitals’ Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin scored two goals and one goal on the power play against the Calgary Flames in a National Hockey League (NHL) regular season game. His team won with a score of 5:2 and now guaranteed its place in the play-offs.
Ovechkin broke the record of the legendary Canadian player Wayne Gretzky in terms of the number of goals scored in the regular NHL championship. The Russian striker scored goals in 639 matches. Gretzky played 638 games.
Ovechkin played in 64 matches in total this season, scoring 21 goals and making 31 assists. In the game against the Florida Panthers on February 25, the Russian forward played his 1,400th NHL game.
Ovechkin has scored 843 goals in his entire career in the National Hockey League. Legendary Canadian Wayne Gretzky, who tops the list of the best snipers in NHL history, has 894 goals. The difference is 51 goals.
