Russian grandmaster Sergei Karjakin criticized French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to establish a ceasefire during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. His words guide the way “Sports Express”.
“This is extreme sarcasm! When we start having problems on the front, they try to use every excuse to persuade us to negotiate peacefully. I am sure that if Russia did not have the initiative at the front now, such proposals would not exist. Absolute skepticism and manipulation,” Karjakin said.
The games in Paris start at the end of July.
At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) appealed to international sports federations, recommending that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions.
To qualify for the Games, Russian athletes will have to sign updated conditions of participation that include a commitment to respect the Olympic Charter, including the “peaceful mission of the Olympic movement”, the IOC said. Russian athletes who rank well in their own disciplines will be allowed to compete.
