Roman Kostomarov, the 2006 Olympic champion in ice dancing, plunged into the ice pit several times before being hospitalized. He talked about this in the documentary film “Roman Kostomarov: Twice Born” premiered in Moscow on March 7.
“On the 9th, I went to the bathhouse to take a steam bath, dived into the ice hole several times, and it felt as if my body had received a hard blow. On the way home after the bath, I felt an incredible cough. “I began to feel a strong stabbing in my side,” the athlete recalled.
At the beginning of January 2023, Kostomarov was hospitalized after New Year’s performances at an open-air show. It was reported that he was in intensive care due to pneumonia and was connected to a ventilator, and his condition was evaluated to be extremely serious. He later received treatment at Kommunarka. Parts of his arms and legs were amputated.
On December 17, 2023, Kostomarov took part in choreographer Ilya Averbukh’s performance “Together and Forever”, moving on ice on skates.
In 2007, Kostomarov was awarded the Order of Friendship for his great contribution to the development of physical culture and sports and high sporting achievements.
