The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced the sentence former world number one Simona Halep received for anti-doping rule violations from four years to nine months. This has been reported official website court.
Halep can return to competition immediately as she has already served her provisional suspension from October 2022.
The CAS panel ruled that the Romanian tennis player was able to prove that doping entered his body through a “contaminated” dietary supplement and that his anti-doping rule violations were not intentional.
Halep has been provisionally suspended from competition since October 2022 after a doping test at the 2022 US Open came back positive for the banned substance roxadustat. On May 19, the Tennis Injury Authority (ITIA) announced that Halep had been charged with another anti-doping rule violation related to her biological passport performance.
Halep, 32, is the winner of two Grand Slam singles tournaments (French Open 2018, Wimbledon 2019). In total, she won 24 tournaments under the auspices of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), including one in singles and one in doubles.
