Russian forward and Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin has closed the gap on legendary Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky in the list of the best snipers in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Ovechkin scored in the 25th minute of an NHL regular season game against the Philadelphia Flyers, with assists from Tom Wilson and Hendrix Lapierre.

The legendary Canadian scored 894 goals during his career. Ovechkin now has 839 goals, the difference is 55 goals. 38-year-old Ovechkin, who played a total of 56 matches this season, scored 17 goals and made 27 assists.

Ovechkin 1,400 in a game against the Florida Panthers on February 25. Played the NHL game. He became the 41st player in the league to surpass this goal.

The match between the Capitals and Flyers at Capital One Arena resulted in a 5:2 victory for the home team. Washington got its second win in the last three games of the regular season. Philadelphia lost its third of its last four NHL games.
