Russian New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin became the first star of the NHL regular season game against the Calgary Flames.
The goalkeeper stopped all 30 shots at his own goal for the first time this season and did not concede a goal. The match took place at the Madison Square Garden arena in New York and ended with the home team winning with a score of 2:0.
The second star was Canadian Rangers forward Will Quill, who scored a goal. The third star was Swedish Calgary goalkeeper Jakob Markström, who made 29 saves.
In the middle of the second period, Russian Rangers forward Artemi Panarin got into a fight with Slovakian Flames forward Martin Pospisil. Hockey players collided several times during portions of play and then started a fight during a pause in the match, which quickly escalated into a mass brawl involving other players. Referees had to separate the opponents to prevent a full-fledged fight.
The New York club got its fifth consecutive win in the regular season. The Rangers sit second in the Eastern Conference standings with 71 points after 53 games. Calgary sits tenth in the West with 55 points.
