Russian forward and Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin became the third hockey player with the longest goal streak among players 38 and older in National Hockey League (NHL) history.

In the NHL regular season match against the Vancouver Canucks (2:3, overtime), Ovechkin scored a goal and extended his goal streak to five games. Only two hockey players have had more chances: Johnny Butsik for the Boston Bruins in the 1974/1975 season (six games) and Brett Hull for the Detroit Red Wings in the 2003/2004 season (seven games).

Ovechkin’s personal record in the NHL is seven consecutive games with a goal scored (2005/06 season). This season, Ovechkin played a total of 48 matches in the regular season and scored 13 goals and 23 assists in these matches.

The Russian continues to pursue Wayne Gretzky’s sniping record. The Moscow forward has 835 goals. The legendary Canadian scored 894 goals in his NHL career; Ovechkin is currently 59 goals behind him.
