In his comments to socialbites.ca, two-time Olympic champion Alexander Kozhevnikov talked about the decision of the National Hockey League to send its players to perform at the 2026 and 2030 Olympic Games. According to the former hockey player, the Russian team’s chances of competing in the Olympic tournament have now increased.
“I have a normal attitude towards this decision. We have a chance to get there. It’s important for them that the Canadians play. I am sure that for them the Olympics would be incomplete without Russia. The same goes for the American team,” says Kozhevnikov.
The last two Winter Olympics took place without representatives of the strongest league in the world. In 2018, the Russian team of Olympic athletes won in Pyeongchang, and four years later the Russian team lost to the Finnish team in the final. Before that, NHL players came to the Olympic Games for five tournaments from 1998 to 2014. At the 2014 Games in Sochi, currently the last game involving NHL players, the Canadian team won, beating Sweden in the final. The Finnish team won the bronze medal. This was the team that Russia lost in the quarter-finals.
