One of the judges of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) did not accept the decision to disqualify Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva for four years for anti-doping rule violations. The publication reports that Times.
CAS’s decision to ban the athlete for four years, effective from December 2021, was announced on January 29. The publication also claims that one of the judges who announced the decision in this case did not agree with this period and insisted on a two-year suspension. This period was recommended by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA).
The CAS judges in the Kamila Valieva case were American Jeffrey Mishkin, British James Drake and Frenchman Mathieu Maisonneuve.
As part of the Russian national team at the 2022 Olympic Games, Valieva took first place in the team tournament and fourth in the individual championship. After his disqualification, the International Skating Union (ISU) awarded the Russians third place, without depriving Russia of medals overall. Gold went to the US team and silver went to the Japanese team.
