The opinion of Igor Levitin, Vice-President of the Russian Federation and member of the board of trustees of the football union, became one of the decisive ones on which confederation the Russian Football Union (RFU) should belong to. This was reported by “Sports Express”.
According to the publication, the RFU’s decision to remain in European football could not have been taken without Levitin.
At a meeting of the RFU Executive Committee on 20 December, all members of the organization considered that a move to Asia without a guarantee from the International Football Federation (FIFA) did not make sense. Additionally, RFU President Alexander Dyukov had previously stated that the possibility of moving to Asia remained.
In the spring of 2022, FIFA and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) decided to suspend the participation of the Russian national team and all Russian clubs in all competitions controlled by these organizations.
Russian clubs other than Zenit did not play a single match in European cups in 2022. The Russian national team, led by Valery Karpin, played six friendly matches in 2023. The issue of moving to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has been under consideration since autumn 2022.
