The International Football Federation (FIFA) announced the winner of the Best award, given to the best football player of the year, to the forward of the Argentine national team and American club Inter Miami Lionel Messi.
In addition to the Argentinian, French forward Paris Saint-Germain Kylian Mbappe and Norwegian forward Manchester City Erling Haaland also competed for the award. Before this, Messi was twice FIFA Footballer of the Year.
However, Messi himself did not come to the awards ceremony. DSports initially reported that the reason for this decision was the voting result, which Messi did not win.
After playing for PSG for two years, Messi was transferred to Inter Miami in the summer of 2023. On August 20 last year, the Argentinian won the League Cup, the first trophy in America. After 14 matches for Inter Miami, Messi scored 11 goals and 5 assists. There is currently a pause in MLS before the season starts. In October, the forward won the eighth Ballon d’Or of his career.
In December 2022, Messi became world champion as part of the Argentine national team. This is the first trophy of this kind in the career of a star football player. In the tournament, the striker scored seven goals in seven matches, four of which came from penalties.
