Second place was taken by Sofia Muravyova (student of Evgeni Plushenko). After the short program, Valieva took the lead, almost three points ahead of Petrosyan.

After Valieva won the team competition at the Beijing Olympics, a scandal broke out around Valieva when it was announced that traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were detected in a doping test. Despite this, she was allowed to compete in the individual championship and finished fourth.
Valieva’s case is being considered by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The hearing was held in September, but the court postponed the case to November for the preparation of additional documents. CAS will issue an opinion at the end of January 2024.
