The International Football Federation (FIFA) has threatened Brazil with the ban of national teams and clubs from participating in international tournaments if it intervenes in the election of the new president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). Associated Press reports.
The agency received a letter from FIFA in which it said the CBF could be suspended if the organization held quick elections to replace Ednaldo Rodriguez as president.
Rodriguez was suspended from duty on December 7. The Rio de Janeiro court made this decision in connection with violations committed during the 2022 elections. Last week, Brazil’s two highest courts upheld the decision.
The Rio de Janeiro court also appointed José Perdiz, the president of Brazil’s highest sports court, as acting president of the Brazilian Football Confederation and the person in charge of organizing new presidential elections within 30 business days. According to FIFA, such interventions are unfair.
The Brazilian national team ranks fifth in the updated FIFA rankings. The five-time world champion has 1,784 points. The leader of the ranking was the Argentine national team with 1855 points.
