2006 ice dancing Olympic champion Roman Kostomarov regretted agreeing to have his limbs amputated. The skater talked about this in a program on one of the federal channels, her words were quoted “Channel Five”.
“Then after a while, of course, I regretted it. I didn’t particularly want to be disabled or live disabled in this way. At least they would have let go of their hands,” the skater said.
At the beginning of January 2023, the skater was hospitalized after New Year’s performances at the outdoor show. The champion was taken to intensive care and put on a ventilator with pneumonia, and his condition was assessed to be extremely serious. The athlete was transported to a hospital in Kommunarka, resuscitated and connected to an artificial blood oxygen saturation device (ECMO), after which he remained on a ventilator for a long time.
Complications caused by the disease led to the development of gangrene, for which doctors had to perform a series of amputation surgeries: the skater lost both legs, the hand of one hand and the fingers of the other hand. On July 6, Kostomarov was discharged from the hospital in Kommunarka, where he spent 175 days.
On August 22, the skater made her first public appearance, going on the ice with her husband during the show “Love Letters” by Ilya Averbukh. In December 2023, Kostomarov took to the ice using a prosthesis.
