Speaking on Europe-Plus radio, 2018 Olympic champion in figure skating Alina Zagitova recalled her victory at the Games and talked about how the tournament in Pyeongchang affected her.
“I can say that I am very lucky to win the Olympics. And the emotions I felt after the victory are all-encompassing. These Olympics left a mark on my life. Of course, I went there with the feeling that I was defending my country, my honor, my homeland, my coaches, everyone who stood behind me, I didn’t want to disappoint them,” said the skater.
In addition to the gold medal at the Games, Zagitova won gold at the 2019 World Championships and gold and silver medals at the 2018 and 2019 European Championships. Zagitova is the second figure skater in world history after Kim Young Ah, who managed to win all championships in Russian singles and world figure skating.
Zagitova missed the 2020 and 2021 competitions but has not announced the completion of her professional career since then. In February 2022, Zagitova took part as captain in the Channel One Cup team tournament, which the “Red Machine” team won. Zagitova hosted the show “Ice Age” together with Olympic champion Alexei Yagudin.
In August, the figure skater was involved in a series of scandals. He initially made a slip of the tongue during an interview about hockey, which caused widespread public controversy. Later, Zagitova posted a video of herself crossing a crosswalk at green traffic lights for pedestrians while driving.
