Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski of Australia has admitted that he does not regret agreeing to a rematch with the promotion’s lightweight titleholder Islam Makhachev, as the fight was a way to get out of his comfort zone. “Yes, it seemed to me that my victory was a foregone conclusion. I thought I was destined to be successful. And right after the fight I thought it was a stupid decision. These feelings broke me a little and I went to the press conference after the fight in this state,” Volkanovski said.

On October 21, Makhachev scored an early victory over Volkanovski in the main fight of the evening at the UFC 294 tournament in Abu Dhabi. The Russian player defeated his opponent by knockout in the first round and defended his title for the second time. Originally, Makhachev was supposed to fight Brazilian Charles Oliveira, but he gave up the fight due to an injury.

On February 12, Makhachev defeated Volkanovski by unanimous decision after five rounds at UFC 284 in Perth. For the Russian, this victory was the 24th victory with a single loss in his professional career.

Makhachev won the UFC lightweight championship by defeating Oliveira by second-round submission on October 22, 2022.
