Spartak Romantsev’s former coach defended vodka in stadiums

Former coach of Spartak and the Russian national team and eight-time Russian champion Oleg Romantsev said he supports the initiative to return alcoholic beverages to football stadiums. His words guide the way “Championship.com”.

“Alcohol should be allowed in stadiums, you are laughing in vain. Since you can entertain the idea that you can play in -10°C, you can also entertain the idea that you can drink a glass of vodka in the stands,” Romantsev said.

Romantsev coached Spartak from 1989 to 2003. Under his leadership, the red-whites became champions of the USSR, eight-time champions of Russia, winners of the USSR Cup and three-time winners of the Russian Cup.

In Russia, a ban on the sale of low-alcohol drinks in sports halls was introduced in 2005, and in 2004 its advertising in stadiums was banned. At the same time, according to media reports, the FAS announced that it would allow beer advertising in stadiums if authorities lift the ban on sales in the arena during matches.

In May 2022, as an experiment, the Moscow government allowed the licensed sale of up to 16.5% alcohol in museums, theaters and stadiums until the end of the year. This practice may become widespread if a law that the Ministry of Sports is working on is adopted throughout the country.
