Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin said he and Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby are changing the National Hockey League (NHL). His words guide the way Athletic.

“We saved the league. Now a new generation has arrived and I believe that we are old people now. But we saved the league. Now the new generation must prove me wrong, prove that we are not the best. We saved the NHL,” said the Russian.

Due to the lockout, Ovechkin and Crosby made their NHL debuts in the same season – in the 2005/06 championship.

The 38-year-old Russian has 1,497 career points (827 goals, 670 assists) in 1,363 NHL games. The 36-year-old Canadian player scored 1,524 (562+962) points in 1,208 games.

Crosby has won three Stanley Cups so far in his career, while Ovechkin has one.

Ovechkin played in 16 games in the NHL this season and recorded 5 goals and 7 assists. The difference between the Russian player who scored the most goals in the league and Wayne Gretzky is now 67 goals.
