American boxer Jermell Charlo gave up his International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior middleweight title. This has been reported official website of the organization.
Charlo wrote a letter to IBF President Daryl Peoples stating that mandatory title defenses were an issue for him at this stage of his career. As a result, he respectfully gave up his title. In the next fight, the American was supposed to fight Russian boxer Bahram Murtazaliev.
The IBF will allow #1 contender Murtazaliev to negotiate for a title shot with the next available opponent.
In September, Mexican boxer Saul Alvarez won the fight against Jermell Charlo and retained the title of absolute world champion in the second middleweight category.
Charlo suffered the second defeat of his career with 35 wins and one draw. After entering the ring, he was stripped of his WBO junior middleweight championship belt. This title now belongs to Australian-Russian boxer Tim Tszyu. He was scheduled to fight Charlo for the title of undisputed junior middleweight world champion in January 2023. The American refused to hold the meeting, citing his broken arm. The fight never happened – Charlo got into a fight with Alvarez.
