Yerevan (Armenia) will host the World Sambo Championship in 2023. The tournament will take place between 10-12 November. This was reported by official site International Sambo Federation (FIAS).
Teams from 65 countries applied to participate in the tournament, whose partners are Rosneft and VTB Bank. In accordance with the decision of the FIAS Executive Committee, athletes from Russia, Belarus, France and refugee teams will compete in neutral status.
The competition will be held in 21 weight categories.:
Women: 50 kg, 54 kg, 59 kg, 65 kg, 72 kg, 80 kg, +80 kg;
Men: 58 kg, 64 kg, 71 kg, 79 kg, 88 kg, 98 kg, +98 kg;
Combat Sambo: 58 kg, 64 kg, 71 kg, 79 kg, 88 kg, 98 kg, +98 kg.
At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) appealed to international sports federations, recommending that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions.
At the meeting of the IOC Executive Committee on March 28, 2023, it was proposed to allow the Russians to remain in neutral status if the athletes are not actively involved in supporting military operations.
