Fernando Alonso After the Brazilian Grand Prix, he talked about his battle with Checo Pérez and admitted that he threw in the towel for a moment: “When he passed me with two laps to go, I said to myself: fourth, that’s it. I resigned because I changed line at Turn 6, went out and picked up a bunch of tire pieces. I thought I wouldn’t have another chance. However, Checo went a little further on lap 1 and gave me the opportunity to close in laps 2 and 3. Then at the end I didn’t even know if there was one lap left or two laps left and when I saw the flag that was it. “It surprised me a little bit, it was the last lap and we went wheel to wheel,” he explained.
“It was a little calmer than it looked from the outside because I had to save some fuel and tires in the last stretch. I was more or less in control. I thought Checo would be around ten laps behind and then open the gap, but with five laps to go I started pulling and saw him getting close, then I couldn’t make the calculations.” .It was very violent, “I told Checo not to put myself under so much pressure next time because I’m already old,” he said. Alonso smiles broadly.
It was no surprise to see Aston Martin’s dynamics in the final races of the Formula 1 World Championship. “It’s been a difficult and painful three weeks, especially in Mexico. We arrived in Austin not fully prepared, the sprint messed things up a bit there, then we were too slow in Mexico and eventually had to give up. “The truth is that the team deserved to be happy,” he celebrated.
“It was a bit unexpected but it gives us morale for the last races and for next year too. This podium is for all the people in the factory. It was nice to witness their efforts, so many people joining together and rowing in the same direction. We will continue to fight until the last race. I want to go to Las Vegas now. “I don’t know if we can maintain the podium level there and in Abu Dhabi, but we can be more competitive than in recent months and above all we can be better than in Mexico, which was our most painful race.”
A clean war
For your part, Sergio Perez Showed fair play and praised Alonso’s performance, after a fight that was always clean: “It was fun because we had so many fights from start to finish, whoever won in the end deserved it. It was a fair fight and it crossed the limits, but many young pilots can learn from our fight, that’s how it goes,” the Mexican claimed.
