A curiosity that attracts the attention of many in Spanish football.

Why are there two teams in Spain called Logroñés? That is what Goal will try to explain it in this article.

It all started in 2009, when the historic CD Logroñés did not show up for the Third Division match against Navarrete. The club was withdrawn from the competition with numerous financial problems and a group of team members began to gather at gate 0 of the Las Gaunas Stadium.

These meetings took shape until they created the Sociedad Deportiva Logroñés, a team registered in the Preferente Riojana. The team was led by a group of partners, who took it to Second B.

With the restructuring of the RFEF’s modest football categories, the SD managed to sneak into the positions that entitled them in the First RFEF.

From CD Varea to UD Logroñés

That same year, another team from Logroño, CD Varea, was promoted to Second B. This club was a historic club in the city. The businessman Félix Revuelta became the largest shareholder of the team, changing it to SAD and the partners approved a name change, from CD Varea to UD Logroñéswith the intention of taking the place left by the historic CD Logroñés.

Therefore, UD Logroñés started its journey directly in Second B, the category in which the second derby between SD Logroñés and UD Logroñés took place. It would be in the 2012-2013 season. And it was the second because the first, that same season, was in the Copa del Rey, where SD defeated UD 2-1.

Both teams will keep the colors of CD Logroñés, the red and white jersey, and will play in the new Las Gaunas stadium.
