The Copa del Rey has no VAR in the first rounds and we will tell you why.
Without being exempt from controversy, video refereeing has revolutionized world football. Spain was no exception. LaLiga has used the support of VAR since the 2018/2019 season.
Not all leagues have embraced the help of technology at the same speed. The Copa del Rey For example, 2023-2024 will have no video referee in the first rounds.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation and its General Assembly approved a complete change in the format four seasons ago, so that it would be played as one match and played by teams from different categories, with the giving more opportunities to modest clubs. But the facilities of some of these clubs do not have the conditions to install VAR.
Is there VAR or not in the Copa del Rey 2023-2024 and when will it be used?
The use of VAR technology in the first cup rounds is not planned. In previous seasons, VAR has been used in the round of 16, a round in which there are predictably very few teams not playing in the First RFEF, Second or First Division who have not installed this technological system.
For the 2023-2024 edition of the Cup, the RFEF has determined that VAR will come into action from the quarter-finals, when there are only eight teams left in the tournament.
