Minnesota Wild goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury called the National Hockey League (NHL) regular-season game against Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin a “tough contest.” His words are quoted by the Wild Press service.
“We played against each other a few times and he scored a lot of goals against me. Every time I feel like I have to stop him, right? But I also want to capture other people’s shots. It was like old times. A tough fight until the end,” said the goalkeeper.
Ovechkin made 46 appearances and scored 27 goals against the Canadian goalkeeper. Fleury played for many years with Washington’s Metropolitan Division rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The match between the Capitals and the Wild took place in Washington and ended with the home team winning the penalty shootout with a score of 3:2. Goals for the winners were scored by Tom Wilson, Dylan Strome and John Carlson. Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov added an assist each.
Marco Rossi and Ryan Hartman scored for the Wild.
Washington rose from last place to 12th in the Eastern Conference standings by collecting seven points in seven games. Minnesota (8 points) is seventh in the West.
