ESPN reporter Greg Wyshinsky believes that the Washington Capitals will not organize a rebuild and rejuvenation of the team until club captain Alexander Ovechkin breaks Wayne Gretzky’s record.
“The franchise right now is Ovechkin’s servant to break the record. If that’s what you want to do, that’s great. Because it makes you a lot of money. And he helped you win the Stanley Cup. He compared the organization to an ATM.
But the best scenario for the team is to go top three in the draft and start thinking about what life will look like after Ovechkin,” Wyszynski said on Sportsnet 590 The FAN.
On October 26, in a regular season game against the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL), Ovechkin scored his 824th career goal. The Russian player scored 42 goals last season. Currently the gap with Wayne Gretzky is 70 goals. In third place is Gordie Howe, who scored 801 goals during his NHL career.
Ovechkin has two goals and three assists in total this season.
