Russian hockey player has a brawl and an assist in his NHL debut

Russian Columbus Blue Jackets forward Dmitry Voronkov brawled with Montreal Canadiens tough guy Arber Dzhekaj and dished an assist in his National Hockey League (NHL) debut.

The meeting took place at the Bell Center in Montreal and ended with a score of 4:3 (overtime) in favor of the hosts. The winners’ goals were scored by Nick Suzuki, Mike Matheson, Sean Monahan and Cole Caufield. Jack Roslovic and Emil Bemström (double) scored for Columbus.

At the beginning of the first period, Voronkov made a power move against Dzhekai, after which the Canadian started fighting. The Russian forward made an assist in the second period.

On October 24, Voronkov was called up from the American Hockey League. This decision was prompted by the injury of the Blue Jackets’ leader, Patrik Laine. The Russian managed to play four matches for Cleveland, Columbus’ farm club, and made one assist in those matches.

Voronkov was selected by the club in the fourth round of the 2019 draft. The hockey player played for Ak Bars from 2018 to 2023. He won a silver medal as a member of the Russian team at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
