Initially, Makhachev was supposed to fight Brazilian Charles Oliveira at the tournament in Abu Dhabi, but he was injured during training.
On February 12, 2023, Makhachev defeated Alex Volkanovski by unanimous decision after five rounds at the UFC-284 tournament in Perth (Australia). For the Russian, this victory was the 24th victory with a single loss in his professional career. This is Makhachev’s first title defense.
In total, he had 26 fights throughout his career, winning 25 and suffering only one defeat.
Volkanovski had 29 fights in mixed martial arts and won 26 of them. He has been competing professionally since 2012 and is the current UFC featherweight champion. Volkanovski ranks second in the official UFC rankings among top fighters regardless of weight category.
