Serbian Spartak’s head coach Alexander Kerzhakov said that Russian expert Stanislav Cherchesov told him that he would become the coach of the Russian national team in 2002. Kerzhakov’s words are quoted as follows: “Sports Express”.

“The day before leaving for the 2002 World Cup, he talked with Lesha Smertin and we lived in the same room. “Come here!” he calls out. And he lectures me for half an hour. As a result, he said he would coach the national team. True, according to their forecasts, this should have happened earlier, in 2010,” Kerzhakov said.

Cherchesov took over the leadership of Hungarian Ferencvaros at the end of December 2021. He led the team to victory in the championship and the National Cup. He was sacked in July 2023 after they were eliminated from the Champions League qualification by Faroese side Klaksvik.

At the home World Cup in 2018, the Russian team under his leadership managed to reach the quarter-finals, where they lost to the Croatian team and eventually reached the final. In the 2020 European Championship, the Russian team failed to qualify for the play-offs and finished last in Group B after Belgium, Denmark and Finland.

Previously Cherchesov saidIt’s like taking a break from work.
