2006 Olympic ice dancing champion Roman Kostomarov said that children gave him this name because he used prosthesis. Kostomarov’s words are quoted as follows: “Sports Express”.
“When I first came to the hospital, when I realized all this, after all the medication, there was horror and an absolute unwillingness to live. At first you don’t hear that you have the most important thing: a wife and children. I love watching my children grow. They call me Papa Robot 3000. The son asked: “Is it possible to rotate your head another 360 degrees?” said Kostomarov.
At the beginning of January 2023, Kostomarov was hospitalized after New Year’s performances at an open-air show. The athlete was taken to intensive care due to pneumonia and was connected to artificial respiration. His condition was assessed to be extremely serious.
Kostomarov was transported to a hospital in Kommunarka, where resuscitation measures were taken and he was connected to an artificial blood oxygen saturation device (ECMO). After that, Kostomarov remained on a ventilator for a long time.
Complications caused by the disease led to the development of gangrene, for which doctors had to perform a series of amputation surgeries: Kostomarov lost both legs, the hand of one hand and the fingers of the other hand. On July 6, the skater was discharged from the hospital in Kommunarka. He spent 175 days in the hospital.
Previously Tatyana Tarasova saidWhether Kostomarov can return to the ice.
