The former Barcelona coach could have been Morocco’s new women’s coach, but he passed up the opportunity when he heard of Vilda’s involvement.
Jorge Vilda, former coach of the Spanish women’s team, was appointed the new coach of the Moroccan women’s team after being fired by the Spanish Federation 16 days after winning the World Cup with La Roja.
Vilda was shown the door after the controversy surrounding the kiss that Luis Rubiales gave Jenni Hermoso without consent during the awards ceremony for the world title that Spain won by beating England in the final.
Now, however, Vilda faces a new challenge with the Moroccan team, which made its debut at the 2023 World Cup and reached the round of 16 in Australia and New Zealand.
According to Cadena COPE, Lluis Cortés was offered the coaching position before Vilda. However, when Cortés heard that the former Spanish coach would work as technical director of the African country’s grassroots football on the recommendation of the RFEF, he ended the negotiations.
Cortés, who led the Barcelona women to a historic treble in 2021, does not want to be associated with Vilda ‘out of principle’, especially after the incident with her former player Jenni Hermoso.
After Cortés rejected the proposal, the Moroccan federation decided to hand the job to the World Cup-winning coach. Vilda replaces Reynald Pedros, who has been in charge since 2021.
