What’s wrong with Kylian Mbappe? The PSG superstar must regain his form with France

The forward has not scored in four games, but he can take advantage of this international break to return to his best level.

Kylian Mbappé came close to scoring one of the goals of the season. In Sunday’s match between Paris Saint-Germain and Rennes, the Frenchman did everything he normally does. He destroyed a defender with a diagonal run, controlled Achraf Hakimi’s pass, cut back to the left, the goalkeeper ran away but also remained on the ground. And then came the failure. His shot went over the crossbar.

It mattered little in the context of the match, which the Parisians won comfortably 3-1. It will also likely mean next to nothing at the end of the season, with Luis Enrique’s side likely to be floundering in Ligue 1. But for a striker like Mbappé, that miss was a rarity. The raw stats still suggest Mbappe is having another scandalous season. He scored eight goals in nine games in all competitions, scoring two against Lyon.

In fact, going four games in a row without scoring is not a cause for major concern. But there is something different about Mbappe this season. It was clear that there would be a lot of rumors after the France captain opted to stay at PSG for (at least) another year, once again rejecting Real Madrid’s interest. And with a new coach, with the specter of an uncertain future haunting him, Mbappé is not quite the usual Mbappé.
