Aston Villa midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo and Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali have left the Italian national team after being questioned by police about possible illegal betting on matches. This was reported by Sky Sport Italy.

The Italian Football Federation announced that in order to protect its players, it decided to release the national team, which will play against Malta and England in the 2024 European Championship qualifiers, from the training camp.

The names of Tonali and Zaniolo were given by former VIP photographer Fabrizio Corona, who spent a total of 10 years in prison under house arrest and special supervision for a series of charges related to blackmail and fraud.

On October 12, Corona announced that Juventus Torino midfielder Nicolo Fagioli had placed a bet, and then said that Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo “did the same” as well. In particular, according to his own data, Zaniolo, as a Roma player, was betting on his team’s match in the Coppa Italia while he was on the bench.

23-year-old Tonali is known for his performances in Brescia and Milan. He played 15 times for the Italian national team. 24-year-old Zaniolo previously played for Inter, Roma and Galatasaray. He also has 15 matches in the national team.
