Former mentor of the Russian national team, Stanislav Cherchesov, commented on the possible transition of the Russian Football Union (RFU) from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to the Asian Confederation. Cherchesov quotes his words “Championship”.
“Asia has a separate organization, but it is not separate from FIFA. The World Cup is hosted by FIFA. You will move to another confederation and FIFA will not let you play. Will they play in the Asian Cup? That’s another question. The important thing is that if you leave a confederation, they will not take you back,” Cherchesov said.
In the spring of 2022, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and UEFA decided to suspend the participation of the Russian national team, as well as all Russian clubs, in all competitions controlled by these organizations. The national team played only friendly matches. In October, the Russians will face Cameroon and Kenya.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin announced that the Russian U-17 women’s and men’s national teams will return to international matches on 26 September. On 8 October, The Independent reported that UEFA may reconsider this decision, and on the 10th it was officially announced that the decision had been reversed.
