Why Sevilla FC is firing José Luis Mendilibar as coach and who would be his replacement

They did not have an easy time for Mendilibar at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, with Nervión’s side winning just two of the eleven games played this season (8 in the League, two in the Champions League and the European Super Cup against City). In addition to those two victories, Sevilla had five draws and four defeats to their name this season.

Seville’s statement

“Sevilla FC decided this Sunday, after a meeting of the management committee, to dismiss José Luis Mendilibar as coach of the club, following the results achieved at the beginning of the season.

The club would like to thank the services provided by the Basque coach, whose role in the history of the entity will be marked by winning the seventh Europa League. José Luis Mendilibar has coached Sevilla in 28 official matches.

This 2023/24 season had a balance of two wins, five draws and four losses.

In the 2022/23 season, since he took charge of the team, he has recorded eight wins, six draws and three defeats between LaLiga and the Europa League.

“Sevilla FC wishes José Luis Mendilibar every success in the future.”

Fernando’s change

Mendilibar also did not have a good time in his last match against Sevilla. He decided to enter against Rayo Vallecano Ivan Rakitic in the 35th minute and removed Fernando from the field, who took the substitution badly and went straight to the dressing room, waving ‘no’ and giving his coach a lukewarm greeting. At the stadium an episode of division arose between the fans of the Sánchez Pizjuán which was generally reflected on the midfielder’s side.

Who replaces Mendilibar

As reported by “Radio Marca”, Javi Gracia and Andoni Iraola are the two names being discussed to replace Mendilibar on Nervión’s bench.
