The Italian team does not know what it is like to beat Real Madrid in an official match. He couldn’t even do that with the best footballer in history.
Real Madrid visits the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium this Tuesday for the second day of the Champions League group stage.
The debut cost Madrid more than necessary, with Jude Bellingham having to come to the rescue at the buzzer to beat the Germans at the Bernabéu.
Now it’s time to visit the Serie A champions, with the southern Italian side expected to battle it out with the Spaniards for top spot in Group C.
Napoli have never beaten Real Madrid in their four previous meetings, with the Italian team suffering just one draw and three defeats. These matches were split between the 1987/88 European Cup (first round) and the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League (round of 16).
History of Real Madrid vs Napoli: matches, statistics, wins, draws and losses
The first match between the two clubs took place on September 16, 1987, with Leo Beenhakker’s Real Madrid winning at the Bernabéu by two goals to nil with goals from Míchel, from a penalty, and from Fernando De Napoli in an own goal. Diego Maradona was the star of the Neapolitans.
A fortnight later they met again at the San Paolo, where they drew level at 1-1: the locals took the lead through Giovanni Francini, but Butragueño sealed the tie before half-time. Andrea Carnevale was sent off the field at Napoli four minutes before the end.
It took almost thirty years for Real Madrid and Napoli to meet again, with the two teams meeting in the last 16 of the 2016/2017 Champions League. The Spaniards were also victorious in that tie, winning both matches by the same score: 3-1 in Spain and 1-3 in Italy.
At the Bernabéu, Insigne gave the Italians the lead, but Benzema, Kroos and Casemiro came back for the Madrilenians. History repeated itself in San Paolo: Napoli took the lead and Madrid came back with goals from Sergio Ramos, an own goal from Mertens and Morata. Madrid would win that Champions League against Juventus in Cardiff (1-4).
