The Drill and the Garnet have faced off for well over a hundred years, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that the current rivalry began to develop.
Argentine football is one of the oldest in the world and therefore boasts one of the longest rivalries in the world. The country’s great rivalry has a centuries-old history, with antecedents dating back to the early years of the 20th century. But there is always an exception: the match between Banfield and Lanús only became the Clásico del Sur in the 1980s.
Although they faced each other for the first time in 1918, for decades there was no animosity between both clubs, who looked the other way when they thought about their classic: Los Andes was the main opponent of the Taladro y Talleres de Remedios de Escalada , the grenade. However, the relationship between the fans began to deteriorate and the rivalry began to grow: in 1982, when Granate was promoted from C to B – where Taladro was -, the climate was already different. HISTORY IN THE FIRST DIVISION
They faced each other in both the amateur and professional era, the peculiarity being that Banfield did not join the loan team until 1940 and the first match they would play that same year was considered won by Lanús at the agencies. The last match in the championship was 2-2 in the Fort of the 2023 Professional League tournament.
HISTORY IN THE SECOND DIVISION
In addition to the duels in the top category, which became a constant from the 1990s, Lanús and Banfield also faced each other several times in the first category of Ascenso over the past 70 years. In fact, it was in Second that the first official clash between the two took place, which was repeated three more times in amateurism and 22 in professionalism, both when the division was called Primera B and when it was transformed into B Nacional.
This is the only item where Garnet rules, with a game difference in his favor. The last crossing? On April 4, 1992, for the 34th round of the 1991/92 B Nacional, they played a 1-1 draw at the Florencio Sola with goals from Mario Gómez and Gabriel Schurrer.
HISTORY IN THE LOCAL CUP
There is very little history between the two in official competitions outside the Championship, the peculiarity being that Banfield has always won to date: in the 1926 AAmF Competition Cup and in the 1944 British Competition Cup they won 2–1, in the 2021 Professional Championship. They won the League Cup 2-0 and in 2022 1-0.
