Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami has received a boost in its chances of reaching the MLS play-offs.
DC United, Charlotte FC and Montreal suffered painful defeats on Saturday, with Wayne Rooney’s team beaten 5-3 by the New York Red Bulls despite Christian Benteke scoring a first-half hat-trick.
Charlotte FC, currently just one point ahead of Inter Miami in the table, lost 3-0 to FC Cincinnati, with Alvaro Barreal, Aaron Boupendza and Luciano Acosta scoring for the home side. In the end, Montreal suffered a 4-1 defeat to Atalanta United, with Joel Waterman receiving a late red card, adding to their misery.
Inter Miami still has two games less than ninth-place DC United. Gerardo Martino’s team is four points behind red-black and knows that it can still qualify for the play-offs if its current form continues.
Inter Miami faced Orlando City without Messi this weekend following his team’s most recent 4-0 home win against Toronto, but the Herons failed to maintain the lead and ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw in the Clásico Florida.
