Russian freestyle wrestler Abdulla Kurbanov defeated Hungarian representative Daniel Ligeti in the fight for fifth place in the up to 125 kg weight category at the World Championships held in Belgrade. This allowed the Russian athlete to earn an Olympic license to compete at the Games in Paris in 2024. The match ended with the score of 8:3 for the Russians.
It is worth noting that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has not yet announced the admission of Russian athletes to the tournament in the French capital.
Kurbanov became the champion of Russia by defeating Eric Dzhioev in the final fight in June 2023.
At the end of February 2022, the IOC issued a call to international sports federations and recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions.
At the meeting of the IOC Executive Committee on March 28, 2023, it was proposed to allow the Russians to remain in neutral status if the athletes are not actively involved in supporting military operations. Some federations offer Russians to sign a declaration of neutrality in order to participate in tournaments.
