Journalist Monumental Sports Network Matt Weirich predicted when Russian Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin could break legendary Wayne Gretzky’s National Hockey League (NHL) goalscoring record.
“His consistency allowed him to challenge Gretzky’s record. With Ovechkin down 72 goals, the streak is almost certain to last at least another year. Weirich said Ovechkin will have the opportunity to significantly reduce that deficit and surpass Gretzky in the 2024/2025 season.
Ovechkin, who played in 74 games in the NHL last season, scored 42 goals and made 33 assists. However, this did not help the Capitals reach the tournament’s play-offs. The Russian scored 822 goals in his NHL career. The difference with Wayne Gretzky is 72 goals. The Canadian has 894 goals and remains first among snipers in NHL history.
The 2023-24 NHL regular season begins October 11. The Capitals will play at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins in their first game on October 14.
