There are 39 world champions who sign a statement asking for structural changes and refusing to go with Spain; Athenea and Zornoza did not sign.
The riot continues. The word seems strong, but it is what the dictionary uses to define a collective and organized rebellion against the competent authority. And that is exactly what is happening to dozens of footballers from the Spanish national team, many of whom are world champions at the Australia-New Zealand World Cup.
Last Friday, a few minutes after Montse Tomé made public the list of those called up for the matches of the Spanish national team for the matches with Sweden and Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League, 39 Spanish footballers confirmed through a statement their position that they are not called with ‘la Roja’. However, two world champions stood out from the rest and did not sign the declaration for various reasons. They are Athenea and Claudia Zornoza.
The mutiny continues: what do they ask and why don’t the world champions join the Spanish national team?
In the statement, uploaded by Alexia Putellas, Lola Gallardo and several other footballers to their Instagram accounts, 39 players (21 of which are World Cup players) ask for “the rstructuring the organizational chart of women’s football, the presidential cabinet and the secretary general, and the r“structuring the communication and marketing area and integrity management.”
This is the full statement:
“The players of the Absolute National Team, recent world champions, and their teammates, as on August 25, 2023, would like to express their enormous dissatisfaction following the events that took place during the medal ceremony at the Women’s World Cup. and the subsequent extraordinary meeting of the Royal Spanish Football Federation. The events that unfortunately everyone was able to see are not something specific and go beyond sports. We must have zero tolerance for these actions, for our teammate, for us and for all women.
A few weeks after what happened, we would like to make public the organization of several meetings with the REF, in which the staff clearly and strongly expressed the changes that we understand are essential to move forward and achieve a structure that not tolerate or participate in such humiliating events.
The players of the Spanish team have at all times had an open attitude to dialogue and tried to convey clear and reasoned reasons that we understand are necessary to carry out our work at the highest level with the respect that we to deserve.
The specified changes to the REF are based on zero tolerance for those people who, from a position within the REF, have incited, concealed or welcomed attitudes that are contrary to the dignity of women. We strongly believe that strong changes are needed in the leadership positions of the REF and specifically in women’s football. All these people understand that they have to be far away from the system that is supposed to protect us and which is unfortunately far away from an advanced society.
Based on the above, we provide a detailed analysis of the requested changes so that this type of attitude does not occur again and to ensure absolute transparency:
Restructuring the organizational chart of women’s football
Restructuring of the Presidential Cabinet and the General Secretariat
• Resignation of the chairman of the REF
• Restructuring of the communications and marketing area
• Restructuring of the integrity department
As we informed the RFEF today, the changes that have taken place are not enough to make the players feel in a safe place, where women are respected, where there is involvement in women’s football and where we can deliver our maximum performance .
We would like to end this statement by expressing that the players of the Spanish team are professional players, and what fills us most with pride is wearing the shirt of our team and always leading our country to the highest positions. That is why we believe that it is time to fight to show that these situations and practices have no place in our football or in our society, that the current structure needs changes and that we do this so that the next generations have a much could have more equal football. the culmination of what we all deserve.
