Erling Haaland is one of the leading candidates for the 2023 Ballon d’Or, but even the Norwegian coach admits Messi should get him.

Manchester City striker Haaland scored 52 goals in all competitions last season and helped his club win trebles in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup. Those performances put many in the running for his first Ballon d’Or.

However, Messi propelled Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar 2022, completing a record-breaking trophy collection. The 36-year-old Argentinian has also been a star for Inter Miami since moving to the United States, making him eligible for an eighth Ballon d’Or.

Norwegian coach Stale Solbakken is expected to side with Haaland in any debate about the best player in the world as he works with the 23-year-old at international level, but when asked about his choice he said: ” Yes.” If you ask me who I think will win, I say Messi will win thanks to his World Cup victory. It still has an impact.”
WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NOW?
Haaland doesn’t pay much attention to the race for individual trophies, telling France Football when asked if he can beat Messi: “It’s a trick question. I’m definitely up there. I’m the best? Maybe. I know I can still improve a lot. I’m still young. But yes, I think I have a chance this year.”
