The Asturian will be the first woman in this position and will make her debut in September in the Nations League against Sweden and Switzerland.
Historic: a woman sits on the bench of the Spanish national team for the first time. It concerns Montse Tomé, who replaces Jorge Vilda in the position of coach of the national women’s team, the RFEF announced on Tuesday through an official statement. Tomé’s appointment comes in response to the regeneration measures announced by Pedro Rocha, acting president of the Federation following the suspension of Luis Rubiales.

RFEF statement
“The Royal Spanish Football Federation has appointed the Montse Tomé women’s national team and she will be the first woman to hold this position in Spain. Tomé (Pola de Siero, 1982) has acted as second coach in Jorge Vilda’s staff since 2018 and consolidates itself as a fundamental part in the growth of the national team. The appointment of Tome is in response to the regeneration measures announced by President Pedro Rocha.
Montse Tomé was a player until 2012 to later train as a coach and focus her career on the bench, which is now the biggest challenge she can have as a coach. He knows the locker room very well and also has extensive knowledge of the excellent national academy. In addition to the recently won World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Spain is champion in the under-17 and under-20 categories.
The first test for Montse Tomé will be this September, contesting the first two days of the UEFA Women’s Nations League. On September 22, Spain will play at home against Sweden (FIFA ranking leader) and will receive Switzerland in Córdoba on the 26th of the same month. They are two games that are most in demand, against two rivals who have played in the World Cup before, both obligations are solved with the win for the Spaniards.”
