The government took action after confirming that Luis Rubiales had not resigned and would continue as president of the Spanish Football Federation. Víctor Francos, Minister of State for Sport and Chairman of the Supreme Sport Council, held a press conference and said:
“I am eager to talk to Luis Rubiales about what happened and what happened in Sydney. As CSD explained, extreme caution was required in the procedures to be followed in this case. The result was, From the first day, we said that we did not want to take any concrete action until the Federation held its extraordinary meeting. and precisely because of the celebration and because the results were not as expected in the eyes of the Government”.
Sanchez’s words
“Mr Rubiales did not meet the expectations today, the expectations of the players, the expectations of the government or the Spanish society. You have disappointed your reaction. You didn’t do what you should have done. We think that the statements do not match their positions, and therefore we want to make it very clear that the actions of the assembly, far from resolving the situation and calming the environment in which it has put us, have fueled the debate. On Tuesday, the president told him he needed to do more, and far from addressing the issue, what he did was make the situation worse.
The Spanish Government will not remain indifferent to this situation. Mr. Rubiales said that he will not leave, what we want to convey to him is that this Government’s path is over with the RFEF presidency. The government is taking the necessary steps for Mr. Rubiales to make a statement before the TAD and if the TAD accepts and the CSD is able to do so, we will remove him from the presidency. Today we will be filing a complaint with TAD for a very serious offense and, if TAD deems it appropriate in the next few days, we will consider at CSD whether this very serious offense can disqualify you. We have come to a point where the government will take action and TAD will receive its own complaint from MKK. The complaint is due this afternoon and I request an extraordinary meeting next Monday, because any time we can win is welcome. If you open the case and you think this very serious crime deserves to be prosecuted, we will immediately convene the Board of Directors with all the documents. This should be the #MeToo of Spanish sport.”
“I didn’t like the shapes, I saw them on TV much later. It didn’t sound good on the radio, but on TV… He made his decision regarding the fund. I respected his decision a lot this week. All I said was that CSD would do if no action was taken. This is what citizens expect. I don’t feel compelled. The time has come for further consideration of this matter. That’s why the Government won’t make a big splash,” finished Francos.
